Ted Cruz is an American politician and attorney serving as the junior United States Senator for Texas since 2013. He was the runner-up for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2016 election. Cruz also served as a Domestic Policy Advisor to George W. Bush during Bush's 2000 presidential campaign and as Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to 2008. Cruz serves on the Board of Advisors of the Texas Review of Law and Politics.

Ted Cruz was born as Rafael Edward Cruz on December 22, 1970, at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Eleanor Darragh Elizabeth Wilson and Rafael Cruz. At the time of his birth, Ted Cruz's parents had lived in Calgary for three years and were working in the oil business as owners of a seismic-data processing firm for oil drilling. Cruz referred to his parents as "two mathematicians/computer programmers." In 1974, Cruz's father left the family and moved to Texas. Later that year, Cruz's parents reconciled and relocated the family to Houston. They divorced in 1997. He was the longest-serving solicitor general in Texas history and the first Hispanic American to serve in that capacity. From 2004 to 2009, Cruz was an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation.
