Nirmal Purja was born in 1984, in Myagdi District, Nepal. He holds Nepali nationality and belongs to Asian ethnicity. He grew up in the Chitwan district. He enlisted in the Gurkhas Brigade in 2003. Later, he is the elite body of the Royal Boat Special Service in the British Royal Navy. His military career extended over 16 years, until he graduated with the rank of a body cast, to focus exclusively on the expedition Project Possible.

Nirmal Purja career in the mountains did not begin until 2012, when he organized an expedition to the Everest base camp, instead of returning to Kathmandu. He made the decision to clum the summit of the East Lobuche without having previous experience in the high mountains. In Lobuche, he learned to use crampons on the grass by the legendary Sherpa Dorje Khatri. In 2014, he crowned his first Ochomil conquering the summit of Dhaulagiri on a 15-day round trip. In 2016, he conquered its second eight-eight. He successfully crowned Everest but during the descent, he had to rescue a dead climber, just below the balcony at 8380 meters to deliver it to the air rescue team. He rescued a climber in the so-called Death Zone of Everest at 8450 masl, lowering it to 7950 masl, on this expendition he tried to conquer Everest alone and without oxygen, but he had to leave. In 2017, he conquered Everest, as the Key leader of the Gurkha G200E Expedition that got 13 Gurkhas to conquer the summit of Everest together, to commemorate the 200 years of the bodily existence. After the rest of the team in Kathmandu was dismissed, he returned to Everest to conquer three world speed records in the remaining seven days of leave, conquering the top of Lhotse himself on May 27 and Makalu on June 1 in record time. For all these remarkable achievements in high altitude mountaineering, he was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II as a member of the OBE on June 9, 2018.
