Gillibrand won a special election in 2010 to keep the seat and was re-elected to full terms in 2012 and 2018. During her Senate tenure,

She supports paid family leave, a federal job guarantee, and the abolition and replacement of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Gillibrand was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020, following an official campaign announcement on March 17, 2019. After failing to make the third debate, Gillibrand withdrew from the race on August 28, 2019.
