John Elton

Elton John is a British singer, pianist, and composer. He is best known for the most remarkable musician of the

20th century. He is often known by his nickname as the rocket man. 

On May 7th, 1972 Reginald Kenneth Dwight has his name legally changed to Elton Hercules John. He chose the name because of his love for Blues legends Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.  As for his new middle name, it is said that he chose the middle name “Hercules” not after the hero of mythology, but after a horse named Hercules on a British sitcom – Steptoe, and Son.

Elton’s very first job was a part-time pianist at a pub, after that he worked at a music publishing house, he performed at hotels, and he uses to have a band with his friends. In 1967 he collaborated with Bernie Taupin, and created the first song together ‘Scarecrow.’ By 1968, both Elton had become songwriters for DJM Records for other musicians. In 1969 the album ‘Empty Sky,’ Elton’s big break as a musician came out and was followed by ‘Elton John’ in 1970 which hit number four on the Billboard 200 charts. After his first couple of albums got a tremendous following and love, in 1972 he released his next album ‘Honky Château’ which was Elton’s first ever US number one album. ‘Crocodile Rock’ was his first track to get on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts and his album from 1973 

‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ was a smashing success. These songs sent him straight to the top, and he soon established his record label The Rocket Record Company. His 1974 album reached number one in both the UK and the US, and it was shortly followed by ‘Caribou’ and ‘Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.’ During the 1980s Elton performed several live shows with his numerous smash hits like ‘I’m Still Standing,’  ‘Little Jeannie,’ and ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues.’ During the early 90s, he also collaborated with Tim Rice on music for Disney’s film ‘The Lion King’; and gained the highest recognition as the song ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ won him his first Academy Award. In 1997 Elton John’s performance of ‘Candle in the Wind 1997’ at Princess Diana’s funeral soon became the best selling single ever, and it later sold just over 33 million copies internationally.

When Elton is not recording or touring he devotes his efforts to a variety of charities, including his own Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised over $300 million and funded programs across four continents in the 24 years it has existed. He has also been a regular performer at fundraisers for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Rainforest Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation. Elton is Patron or Ambassador to 23 charities and is a Member of Executive Advisory Board to four charities and endows scholarship funds at The Royal Academy of Music and the Julliard School of Music. In 2000 the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences honored John as Person of the Year for his charity work.

Almost every song John sang was hit. His all-time best songs include, 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart', a duet with Kiki Dee which hit the top of the charts in 1976, 'Little Jeannie,' 'Empty Garden' which are considered as Some of the most memorable songs of all time during the year 1980. The next song 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' brought John his first Academy Award win for Best Original Song in 1994 and moreover another song  "Candle in the Wind 1997" proved to be a tremendous success, selling more than 30 million copies that year.

Elton is the most successful solo male in the history of the American charts and the third most successful artist overall, behind Madonna and the Beatles. Since launching his first tour in 1970, Elton has over 4,000 performances in more than 80 countries to his credit.

The decade of the 1970s was the most successful period for John, as his seven consecutive albums reached number one spot in the US, beginning with ‘Honky Château’, ‘Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player’, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and so on. Six of his albums made it to the Rolling Stone’s list of ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time’. Three of his albums from this period gained five stars from Allmusic. Interestingly Elton John’s tribute single dedicated to the late Princess Diana, titled ‘Candle in the Wind 1997’ is the best-selling single in the history of the UK and US singles charts. It sold over 33 million copies worldwide.

Elton John received the 1995 Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’. Of the multiple nominations at the Grammy Awards, John won it five times in various categories. He also won Tony Award in 2000 for Best Original Music Score for ‘Aida’. He has also received five Brit Awards. In 2013, John received the first Brits Icon award. He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Elton John was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995. Later in 1998, he was made Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1992, John founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation as a charity to fund programs for HIV/AIDS prevention.  The aim of the foundation is to eliminate prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and providing services to people living with or at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

Elton was born on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, England, and given the name Reginald Kenneth Dwight. 

His parents Stanley Dwight and Sheila Eileen. At the age of three, he astonished his family by sitting at the piano and playing The Skater’s Waltz by ear. He gained his education from Pinner Wood Junior School, Reddiford School, and Pinner County Grammar School. However, he left studies before A-Level examinations to pursue a career in music. 

At the age of 11, he was awarded a scholarship as a Junior Exhibitor at the Royal Academy of Music and he attended the Academy on Saturday mornings for the next four years.
