Mertens plays from her Belgium national team and is currently a member of the Kim Clijsters Academy, where she has been training since 2015. Mertens started her professional career playing from juniors tennis division where she reached a ranking of No. 7 in 2013. Mertens made her WTA main-draw debut at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas in the doubles event and won her first WTA doubles title at the 2016 ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. In January 2017, Mertens won the Hobart International, beating No. 3 seed Monica Niculescu in the final and got entry into the WTA top 100 for the first time, on 16 January 2017. During the year she participated in multiple events that included  St. Petersburg Ladies' Trophy, Dubai Tennis Championships, Malaysia Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open and  Ladies Open Biel Bienne. She did not score titles at these events but honed her skills and experience. Mertens made her first Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open in 2018. She won her two singles titles at the Ladies Open Lugano in Switzerland and the Morocco Open. She also scored one double title at Ladies Open Lugano. In 2019, she won her first Premier title at Qatar Open and won her two biggest doubles title to date at Indian Wells and Miami Open.
